Breathe Easy With Respiratory Drug Updates!

From time to time, the prescription drugs on your UnitedHealthcare plan are reviewed to provide members with better access and lower costs-- all the while preserving choice. New clinical findings and patient financial patient outcomes fuel this update of the Prescription Drug List (PDL) effective May 1, 2007. The focus of this update is on respiratory inhaler classes.

HOW THIS AFFECTS YOU AS AN EMPLOYEE
No Surprises!  We have prepared this information for you in an easy to read format to make you aware of the recent respiratory drug updates before you go and fill your next prescription.

  • Patients who require Inhaled Corticosteroids (ICS) for asthma management now have access to brand medications at a much lower out-of-pocket cost.
  • For patients who require both ICS and Long-acting beta-agonists (LABA) for asthma management, you now have the choice of prescribing the medications separately (at a lower cost to you), or in combination (at a greater cost to you).
  • Evidence suggests taking a Tier 1 ICS in combination with a Tier 1 LAVA has equivalent therapeutic effect as taking a combination produce (Advair)

YES, there is something you can do to control your costs. Please reference the below chart the next time you speak to you physician about your drug regimen.

Tier 1 is the lowest copayment level, and Tier 3 is the highest copayment level. There are no generic medications in this category.
